MUSCATINE, Iowa – The Muscatine City Council is expected to approve the contract for the installation of public art in the roundabout at Mulberry and 2nd Street during its final meeting of June this Thursday (June 15).
The City Council will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Council Chambers at Muscatine City Hall. The public is welcomed, and encouraged, to attend the meeting in person. A virtual option is available for citizens who do not want to attend in-person. Information on joining the virtual session through the GoToMeeting portal is listed below.
The City Council session will also be broadcast live on the City of Muscatine YouTube channel and on Civic-TV (Muscatine Power & Water Cable Channel 2).
A sculpture by artist Nathan Pierce, entitled “Zenith”, received the Public Art Advisory Commissions recommendation to be placed in the center island of the Mulberry Avenue Roundabout after an online public survey and in-person voting was conducted in 2021. Numerous funding sources have been secured to support the creation and installation of the sculpture.
In addition to authorizing the contract for the installation of the sculpture, the Council will also be asked to approve a purchase order with Heuer Construction for the installation of the artwork’s foundation. The Public Works Department has been working with the Art Center and the chosen artist for creation of a foundation in the Mulberry and 2nd Street roundabout that will support the previously approved artwork.
Two public hearings will be held at the start of Thursday’s meeting with the first regarding the Muscatine Soccer Complex Irrigation Project. The second public hearing will be on a proposal to enter into a General Obligation Sewer Improvement Loan and Disbursement Agreement that is expected to borrow up to $8.5 million for Phase 6 of the West Hill Sewer Separation Project.
