[ARCHIVED] Firefighters quickly contain fire in vacant Jackson Street home

MUSCATINE, Iowa – The Muscatine Fire Department (MFD) responded to and extinguished a fire Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 7) at a vacant home undergoing renovation in the 400 block of Jackson Street.

At approximately 2:33 p.m., the Muscatine Joint Communications Center (MUSCOM) received a 911 call reporting “dark smoke coming out of a residence” at 415 Jackson Street. Firefighters arrived within minutes to find heavy smoke and flames coming from a first-floor window, with additional smoke visible from the eaves.

Crews initiated an immediate fire attack, bringing the blaze under control by 2:41 p.m. No occupants were inside the structure, and no injuries were reported among responders.

Fire investigators remained on scene to conduct an initial investigation. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Preliminary damage is estimated at approximately $40,000.

A total of 10 firefighters responded, along with support from the Muscatine Police Department and Muscatine Power and Water.

The Muscatine Fire Department provides fire suppression, emergency medical services, technical rescue (high angle, rope, water, etc.), building inspections, and public education for the City of Muscatine and surrounding unincorporated areas of Muscatine County—serving a combined population of 43,000 across 145 square miles. MFD also provides HAZMAT response for Muscatine, Louisa, Washington, Keokuk, and Henry counties.

In 2024, MFD firefighters and paramedics responded to more than 5,500 calls for service. Established as a volunteer company on January 7, 1875, the department became a full-time operation in January 1916.
