[ARCHIVED] Fatal Shooting Under Investigation at Muscatine Hy-Vee

MUSCATINE, Iowa – At approximately 2:01 p.m. on Monday, June 30, 2025, MUSCOM received multiple reports of shots fired inside the Muscatine Hy-Vee located at 2400 2nd Avenue. Muscatine Police and emergency medical personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, officers located a female victim, identified as 37-year-old Kalista Rae Hallberg of Letts, Iowa, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Hallberg was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect was identified as Ian Antonio Hernandez, of 7171 W. 60th Street, Trailer #132, Davenport, Iowa. Hernandez fled the scene in a red Chrysler minivan. Officers later located the vehicle at the intersection of Highway 61 and Highway 38. Upon approach, officers observed Hernandez in the driver’s seat with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officers rendered immediate medical aid until Muscatine Fire Department personnel arrived. Hernandez was transported to UnityPoint Health–Trinity Hospital and subsequently airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He remains in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

Preliminary investigation indicates the shooting stemmed from an ongoing domestic dispute between Hallberg and Hernandez.

The Muscatine Police Department is being assisted in the investigation by the Muscatine Fire Department, Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office, and the Iowa State Patrol. The investigation remains active as detectives continue to process the scene and interview witnesses.
