[ARCHIVED] Repaving of Lucas progressing; may reopen October 13

MUSCATINE, Iowa – One intersection is poured back, another will be poured this week, and the third next week as work to complete the reconstruction of Lucas Street from Logan to Fletcher Avenue continues.

Heuer Construction, Inc., the paving subcontractor for Phase 5 of the West Hill Sanitary and Storm Sewer Separation Project, has indicated that if the weather holds Lucas may be reopened to traffic on October 13. However, that date is dependent on the weather and other unforeseen circumstances.

One thing that may slow down the timetable is the expected cool down over the next week that will extend the curing time needed for the concrete to mature.

Heuer crews completed the repaving of the Lucas-Climer intersection on Monday and will pour the first half of the Lucas-Fletcher intersection Wednesday. If the weather holds, Heuer will pour the second half on Friday. Once repaved, Heuer will move down to the Lucas-Knott to prepare that intersection for repaving next week.

Meanwhile, Heuer crews are at work prepping driveways and sidewalks from the 2000 block of Lucas west to the Fletcher intersection. These driveways, including the entrance to the Greenwood Cemetery in the 2000 block of Lucas, will be repaved from east to west and should be completed early next week, weather depending.

Crews are also working to complete the tops of the new storm water inlets along Lucas Street.

Public Works officials remind citizens that Lucas Street is currently closed to through traffic. Once open to traffic, however, the area will remain a construction zone until all concrete work, backfilling, seeding, and punch list items have been completed and accepted by City officials

Please continue to use alternate routes of travel to avoid the construction area when possible. Once the street is open to traffic, please pay attention for construction workers and to traffic control devices.
