[ARCHIVED] Recent rains do not delay Muscatine construction projects

072018 7th Street 02

MUSCATINE, Iowa – Thursday’s rain may have limited work on several major construction projects in Muscatine, but Friday proved to be a good day to pour concrete at various locations. The Mississippi Drive Corridor Reconstruction Project (MDCRP) formed and poured sidewalk from Sycamore to Cedar, the West Hill Sewer Separation Project Phase 4A completed pouring the Sycamore and 7th Street intersection, and crews poured the next section of Linn Street following underground work by Muscatine Power & Water.

KE Flatwork will be closing the Oak Street intersection with 2nd Street on Monday, July 23, in the next phase of the 2nd Street reconstruction from Mulberry Avenue to Mad Creek. KMA Excavating is wrapping up the installation of storm sewer east of the railroad tracks and will begin storm sewer work in the Oak Street intersection next week.

KE Flatwork will be removing the pavement in the Oak Street intersection and on 2nd Street up to just west of the Family Dollar store as the process to prepare these areas for repaving begins. The final section of the 2nd Street work, Mad Creek to just west of Family Dollar, will begin after the Oak Street intersection is reopened.

The main roadway for Mississippi Drive is poured with work now focusing on sidewalks and intersections. Work continued to rebuild the street side of Lot Four between Sycamore and Cedar with the forming and pouring of the sidewalk. Hardscape Solutions Inc. installed brick pavers in the medians and crosswalks from Sycamore to Mulberry and Heister Masonry has been working on the District Monument that is located at the Walnut Street intersection.

The landscape subcontractor is expected next week, weather permitting, while KE Flatwork continues work on the intersections and the railroad crossing at Cedar Street. Muscatine Power & Water is not expected before August 20 to begin installation of street lights and traffic signals along the remaining second of Mississippi Drive.

Signage and wayfinding signs have yet to be installed along the entire Mississippi Drive corridor with that work awaiting the completion of modifications to the signs and pedestals. That work should begin around the first part of September.

The tentative opening date for Mississippi Drive from Iowa to the #1 Alley on Mulberry Avenue is September 28, weather permitting.

KE Flatwork completed pouring the intersection at Sycamore and 7th Streets on Friday with 7th Street from Cedar to Iowa expected to be open on July 27 after the completion of sidewalk construction and backfilling of dirt the first part of next week. Once this section is open, KE Flatwork and KMA Excavating will prepare the two blocks from Iowa to Pine for repaving.

KMA Excavating will be closing the Spruce Street intersection on Monday, July 23, as the underground work moves into the 500 block of West 7th Street. Once work has been completed millings will be placed down to temporarily reopen the intersection.

072018 Linn St 01LINN STREET WORK

Underground work and repaving Linn Street from Mississippi Drive to the #1 alley is taking a little longer than expected but crews were able to pour the final section of Linn Street Friday morning. The top half of Linn Street will remain closed to traffic as electrical work continues in the area along with the reconstruction of #1 alley. Parking is available on the lower half of Linn Street.

The 1200 block of Dale Street will have restricted access through July 27 for repairs to a sewer lateral at the corner of East 10th and Dale streets. Drivers will be able to turn left from Dale onto 10th Street but Dale Street will be completely closed in front of 1244 Dale until Friday, July 27.

Crews working on a private sewer lateral which led to the discovery a sinkhole caused by a break in another sewer lateral. Repairs are expected to take one week.

Muscatine Power and Water (MPW) will be closing the #1 Alley behind the Pearl Condominiums on Monday, July 23, to replace a transformer box. Users of the parking ramp can still enter the alley from Chestnut but will not be able to exit onto Iowa Avenue until the work is completed. MPW anticipates that the work will be completed by the end of the day on Monday.
