[ARCHIVED] Council to discuss deferred firefighter positions Thursday (Oct. 21)

City Council Meeting (3) (JPG)

MUSCATINE, Iowa – The Muscatine City Council will discuss options for restoring one or two of the deferred firefighter positions, and will be asked to approve the contract for the 2021-2022 Full Depth Patching Project when the Council convenes at 7 p.m. Thursday (October 21) in the Council Chambers of Muscatine City Hall.

A virtual meeting will also be held in conjunction with the in-person meeting for those who want to view the proceedings or make a comment but do not feel comfortable in attending in person. (details are below).

Three firefighter positions slated to be filled in the 2021-2022 fiscal year were deferred by the City Council in 2020 due to concerns over revenue impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic. Several council members have indicated that now that the city has a better idea of the revenue impacts it might be time to discuss fillings one or two of those positions.

The Department of Public Works has compiled a list of streets and alleys to be included in the 2021/2022 Full Depth Patching Project. The streets and alleys tentatively included for the 2021/2022 program were selected from a matrix developed to rank streets and alleys in Muscatine. Heuer Construction, Inc.,was the apparent low responsive, responsible low bidder at $440,800.

Thursday’s City Council meeting is open to the public. Citizens attending the meeting are asked to follow current CDC (Centers for Disease Control) recommendations for wearing a mask indoors whether vaccinated or not. The City of Muscatine does not require wearing a mask, but does urge the public to follow Public Health and CDC recommendations.
