MUSCATINE, Iowa – The Muscatine City Council will be asked to approve two “high priority” street projects during their October 1 meeting in the Council Chambers at Muscatine City Hall. The Council, Mayor, and those with items on the agenda will meet in Chambers, but public participation will still be through the virtual meeting session that will also be running.
The Muscatine City Council will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 1, for a hybrid session that will also include a virtual meeting to allow the public to participate. The session in Council Chambers will also be broadcast live on the City of Muscatine YouTube channel and will also be shown live on Muscatine Power & Water Cable Channel 2.
The meeting will begin with the presentation of a Life Saving Award by Mayor Diana Broderson to Muscatine Police Officer Casey Jensen. On August 25, 2020, Officer Jensen was dispatched to the riverfront regarding a female that was having a mental health crisis. The female was in the mud at the water line and refused to come to the shore. She walked into the Mississippi River trying to end her life saying she wanted to die. Officer Jensen entered the river, grabbed ahold of her and brought her back to shore. The woman’s life was saved due to the quick actions of the officer.
Four other officers who have received awards while the Council met in virtual sessions the last several months will also be in Chambers Thursday to be recognized in person by the Mayor and Council.
HIGH PRIORITY ROAD WORK PLANNED
Sections of Cedar Street, Ford Avenue, and Evans Street have been identified as “high priority” areas in need of immediate repair. Due to better than anticipated Road Use Tax revenues, Public Works Director Brian Stineman and his staff reviewed the list of deferred full depth patching street sections and determined three areas that could not wait until next spring. Heuer Construction, Inc., provided the lowest responsible quote of $47,710.00 to complete the work.
“We know that there are other areas that need repair,” Stineman said. “As we get a better grasp on revenues and if the weather permits, there may be other areas that we can repair before winter comes.”
In addition to the full depth patching, Stineman and his staff identified one asphalt street as a “high priority” item and in need of immediate repair. Stineman will ask the Council to approve Taylor Ridge Construction, who provided the lowest bid, to mill and overlay Leroy Street from Mulberry to Amherst Avenue. The $43,550 project will also be paid for from funds now available through the Road Use Tax.
