MUSCATINE, Iowa – Mississippi Drive will begin a two-year facelift on Monday (May 8) as the street is closed from Sycamore to Pine Street for the first phase of a multi-phase project to reconstruct and enhance the main artery through downtown Muscatine along the Mississippi River.
A detour for through traffic has been established for the duration of the project which will take motorists from 2nd Street on the east side, up Mulberry Avenue to 8th Street, then west to Main Street, and back down to Hershey Avenue and on to Grandview Avenue. The downtown business area will be accessible throughout the project and signage will also be in place to direct motorist back to the downtown area along the detour route.
The City of Muscatine has developed a web page (www.muscatineiowa.gov/construction) that will keep citizens and visitors apprised of not only the Mississippi Drive reconstruction project but also the various other projects that are or will be underway in Muscatine. The City has also worked with the Muscatine Area Geographic Information Consortium (MAGIC) to develop an interactive map that will provide real time displays of construction zones, local traffic routes, and detours around work areas (www.muscatineiowa.gov/construction/map). These can be found under the Construction Project 2017 icon on the City’s home page.
Interested individuals and business owners can also take advantage of the “Notify Me®” section located on the home page of the City’s website. By signing up with your email address you are able to receive alerts on a variety of topics that you select from the menu options including “Construction Project Updates” which will be used to send out news including street closures and openings.
The Construction Project page includes sections on the Mississippi Corridor, West Hill Sewer, and the Kent Stein to Deep Lakes Park trail projects. Also being undated at this time are the sections identifying future projects, projects currently underway, and recently completed projects. More features will be added to the page later on.
The Mississippi Corridor section contains links for project updates, a project map, a project detour map, an FAQ section, contacts list, and a link to the Community Voice component of the City’s web site where individuals can sign up to express concerns, suggest ideas, or ask questions about Mississippi Drive or a variety of other subjects.
The links to updates and maps will continue to be used and improved upon throughout this and subsequent construction seasons.
Tentatively the second phase of the Mississippi Drive reconstruction is scheduled to begin at the end of August and include the portion of Mississippi Drive/Hershey Avenue from Pine Street to Green Street. The third phase tentatively calls for the area from Sycamore to Mulberry and the fourth phase tentatively includes 2nd Street from Mulberry to the intersection with Iowa 92. The phases and areas of work may change as the work progresses.
