Water & Resource Recovery Facility

Functions

The City of Muscatine Water & Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF), also known as the Water Pollution Control Plant, collects and treats wastewater from homes, commercial buildings, and industrial facilities. The wastewater is transported it through a series of pipes, known as the collection system, to the facility. A separate collection system brings stormwater runoff to the facility for treatment.

The WRRF removes harmful organisms and other contaminants from the wastewater and from the stormwater so that the "cleaned" water can be safely discharged into the Mississippi River.

About the Plant

The Muscatine Water & Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF) is an activated sludge treatment plant. In its large tanks, the plant performs filtration processes that would occur in nature to help remove organic material. The clean water is returned to the Mississippi River and the biosolids are stored for applying to designated land. Learn more about WRRF operations.
