Medal of Honor

The Medal of Honor is awarded posthumously to a member of the department who has met his or her death as a result of an injury received in the performance of his or her duty. The presentation of this medal is made to the family of the deceased officer in acknowledgement of his or her sacrifice.

The bar below the medal is presented to the family in addition to the award and may be worn by the deceased if he or she is buried in uniform.
